What gets measured gets improved

2020-09-18T06:48:28+00:00September 18th, 2020|

I am sure you've heard the above phrase coined by Peter Drucker. We are obsessed with reaching or even surpassing the numbers. If we can quantify and measure, we can and probably will improve. It's easy to measure a persons' or factories' or countries or X's output. But, should we measure and improve it just because we can measure it and get better at it? Shouldn't we only measure what matters? Here's [...]

Principles

2020-09-18T06:10:49+00:00September 18th, 2020|

Why is living a life with principles simpler? Because in essence principle is a master decision. A decision that eliminates the need to make many decisions of lower order. It's much simpler to live a life with a few principles than 1000's of rules. It makes the decision process faster and constantly reminds us of the big picture.

Feeling bad when making a right decision?

2020-09-14T09:11:39+00:00September 14th, 2020|

Has it ever happened to you that you felt bad even though you made the right decision? Our brains consist of two systems; system 1 (emotional brain) and system 2 (rational brain). Systems are not completely aligned. Usually its the emotions that move us, that make us want something. The ratio merely figures out how we are about to achieve it. The problem arises when ratio comes up with a wish, [...]

Frugality

2020-09-14T08:36:45+00:00September 14th, 2020|

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines frugality as "the quality or state of being frugal: careful management of material resources and especially money". But, I would rather define frugality as "not spending ANY resources on things that don't mean much to YOU". First: ANY resource - money, time, thinking etc. Why limit careful management only to material resources? Second: meaning to YOU. What is wrong with spending all the resources on something that means a [...]

On giving advice

2020-09-14T08:23:54+00:00September 14th, 2020|

We enjoy giving unsolicited advice to others on how to live (which job to take, partner to choose, money to spend etc.). But isn't it true that advice is only possible if we know the goal of living - the meaning of life? Even if we established the meaning of our own lives, how do we know the others chose the same?

Philosophy of life

2020-09-27T19:11:25+00:00September 14th, 2020|

I've figured experiences enable the fastest growth and make me content. I seek to collect the most experiences I care for throughout my lifetime. I make the decisions for which I reasonably predict will enable most such experiences. Still, sometimes I need to remind myself of that and move out of comfort zone. The below quotes proved to be most effective: Sean Carroll (The Big Picture): Our lives are not dress [...]

Best friends

2020-09-11T10:43:10+00:00September 11th, 2020|

Have you ever thought about the underlying characteristic of your best friends? Might it be that the best friends are accepting you unconditionally? That they don't expect you to behave a certain way? That they are not trying to make you stay the same but allow you to grow even at the cost of losing you? May that also apply to romantic relationships?

Bilionaires with six packs

2020-09-11T10:33:04+00:00September 11th, 2020|

If knowledge was power, we'd all be billionaires with six packs. Knowledge only has the potential to be turned into power. To materialize this potential, knowledge needs EXECUTION! When do we execute (instead merely think)? Only if our emotions move us when we think about the goal. If they don't, we're not going to execute.

Animal Farm

2020-11-02T21:11:56+00:00September 2nd, 2020|

Author: George Orwell ASIN: B07K59VB7W A great short book about how revolutions get hijacked. A fable for grown-ups. EXCERPTS [The message cannot be convincingly revealed through paragraphs (as with most books). I recommend reading this short fable for grown-ups.] The book tells the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Ultimately, however, the [...]

The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself

2020-11-08T10:29:39+00:00September 1st, 2020|

Author: Sean Carroll ISBN: 978-1101984253 Remember Nietzsche's God is dead? The outlook on life presented on this book is exactly the one he had in mind, when he said it. While I do agree with Nietzsche that we're nowadays predominantly facing a crisis of meaning I do agree with Carroll as well. We shouldn't stop exploring just because it may cause a crisis of meaning. It is up to us [...]
